Medicaid Unwinding: What You Should Know

Understanding recent changes in Medicaid is crucial for everyone relying on this vital healthcare program. Here's a breakdown of the key insights:

1. Disenrollment Concerns: In 2023, around one in five Medicaid users got kicked out of the program. This left many worried about their health because they lost their coverage.

2. Seeking New Coverage: Some people who lost Medicaid found new help. Nearly half got back on Medicaid or found other options. But about a quarter couldn't afford new coverage, so they remain without any.

3. Financial Worries Persist: Even those with new coverage still worry about money. About half are concerned about affording their monthly premiums, and three-quarters stress over the costs of healthcare services.

4. Challenges with Renewal: Renewing Medicaid can be a hassle. Two-thirds of people tried to renew it, but more than half faced problems. Common issues included long waits on the phone and difficulty with paperwork.

5. Proof of Residency: In some states, like those that didn't expand Medicaid, proving where you live can be tricky. People in these states were more likely to be asked for proof of residency during the renewal process.

To date, 41 states (including DC) have adopted the Medicaid expansion, while 10 states have not adopted it. These non-expansion states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

These statistics shed light on the struggles many face in navigating Medicaid changes. At CFIA, we're committed to helping you understand and navigate these shifts. Let us guide you to find the best healthcare solutions for your needs.
